Dec 12, 2016 If you access user /Library often you might want to just enable it permanently as a visible folder in the user home directory. This is a simple settings change that will cause MacOS Finder to always show the Library folder in the user home: From the Mac OS Finder, go to the Users home folder; Pull down the “View” menu and choose “View Options”.

Finding and accessing opt isn’t as simple as finding other hidden folders. In this article, we explain why and how to find and access the opt folder.

  1. Beneath the surface of OS X is an entire world that you can access only from the command line. Terminal (in your /Applications/Utilities folder) is the default gateway to that command line on a Mac. With it, instead of pointing and clicking, you type your commands and your Mac does your bidding.

How to find opt folder?

One of the reasons this isn’t as easy to find as Library or even Net or var is that macOS does not have an opt (or /opt) folder. Instead, macOS has a /usr/local/opt folder, which is something you can make visible in Finder.

It can scan your whole gallery, locate duplicates and point out similars. You usually only use one of those, so there’s really no point in keeping them all.The easiest way to get rid of those files is to get a duplicate photo finder, such as. The first thing you need to do to organize photos is remove the extras. There’s a high chance you’ve got plenty of duplicates and similar images — 15 shots from slightly different angles, for instance. Where is photos library in mac.

Ordinarily, you aren't going to need to find and access the /usr/local/opt folder, unless this is something you need for downloading new software applications from third-party providers, such as Intel or Homebrew.

Whatever the format you find opt within your macOS directory, the purpose of this folder is: “a directory for installing unbundled packages (i.e. packages not part of the Operating System distribution, but provided by an independent source), each one in its own subdirectory.”

Navigating to this opt folder can be done one of two ways: either go through Terminal or search for it using Finder.

How to find opt folder using Terminal

  1. Go to Terminal - in the Utilities folder.
  2. Type in the following command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
  3. Now Reinitialize the Finder, either by rebooting or clicking the Finder while holding down the Option key, then selecting “Relaunch.”
  4. Now this should show every hidden folder, including the /usr/local/opt folder.
  5. Once you are ready to hide them again, go to Terminal and input the following command: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

How to access Opt folder using the Finder

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Press Command+Shift+G to open the dialogue box.
  3. Input the following search: /usr/local/opt
  4. Now you should have temporary access, so you should be able to drag it into the Finder favourites if you want to access it again.

Problem to be Solved

You’ve got a great backup of your OSX computer, and you need to get something back from the Library folder, say something in the Application Support subfolder. These instructions will show you how to do unhide the User Library folder on the external drive or even on a second Mac.

Credit goes to Steve Davidson for teaching me how to do this.

Let’s Start with a Remote Mac Because the Syntax is Simpler

On the remote Mac, enable Remote Login (https://www.podfeet.com/blog/how-to-set-up-a-mac-for-remote-login/) and use the ssh command to Secure Shell into the remote Mac. In this example, our local machien name is Podfeet-rMBP, and our remote Mac’s name is Core-i7-4.local.

I have the same user account on both but I used the allison@ the beginning to show you how to enter your user name if it’s different on the other Mac.

Note that the Library Folder is Not Visible

Here’s a screenshot of the remote Mac Core i7, and the Library folder is invisible.

Access the library webserver folder on mac os without terminal download

Enter the chflags nohidden Command

User Library Folder is Now Visible on the Remote Mac

Next Let’s Repeat This On An External Volume

My backup drive has a nice long annoying name “Core i7 backup 2011 03 03”. As you can see I have a backup of my home (allison) directory but I can’t see the Library folder.

Repeat the chflags Command

In this case we have the same command but we have to navigate first to Volumes, then to the specific backup drive name (with those annoying spaces replaced with and space) and then to the user directory and then Library.

To be honest it might be easier to change the name of the volume not to have spaces than it is to type it this way!

Or you could use quotes like this:

Access The Library Webserver Folder On Mac Os Without Terminal 1

Now Your Library is Visible on Your Backup Volume

Important note – you only have to do this one time, every time you connect your external drive the Library will be visible.
